In any powered audio equipment the power supply influences the sound. The old adage of Garbage-In-Garbage-Out fits perfectly. Crucial quality factors include supply impedance, noise and the ability to react to transient demands. Upgrading a power supply can offer improvements anywhere between subtle and dramatic.
Recent years have seen a flourish of equipment powered from external supplies. Equipment is easy to design this way, with any noise radiated from power supply components kept well away from the delicate audio circuits. DACs, music servers and even headphone amplifiers often use an external power supply, which feeds your gear with either AC or DC. So what's the problem?
Many OEM power supplies are woefully inadequate, some being so underrated they're prone to overheating-related failure! Others operate acceptably but don't allow anything like the full potential of a piece of hi-fi equipment to be reached. Furthermore, some supplies hum due to use of an underrated or poorly assembled transformer. Many OEM supplies are of the switch-mode (SMPS) variety, which, unless carefully-specified, are prone to being noisy - electrically and even audibly! The typical SMPS contains a lot of poorly-filtered high frequency noise, which contaminates important audio circuits, degrading performance. The result of a compromised power supply is a harsh and thin sound lacking in body, fluidity and deep bass.
